Justin Moyle’s looks back on the inspiration for Muriel, the Split Screen Bean machine…

It was mid 2007, and I was packing shelves in ‘Woolworths’ Night-fill as well as running an old suburban Laundromat. My life had seemingly come off track. I am a creative soul and what I was doing lacked any relevance for my self-expression and creative intelligence. The Laundromat was doing okay and paying its way, but I was yearning to turn it into something spectacular, more of an extension of my personality.

I started investigating options regarding developing the cleaning business into a Laundromat Café. Creating something steeped in nostalgia was my objective; reminiscent of the 60s, but not in a heavy-handed ‘Hungry Jacks’ manner. I’d studied design subjects at Uni, have always been a dedicated hoarder of all things vintage, and consequently thought that I had the relevant knowledge and skills to bring it all together.

Kombi Koffein Mission Statement:
“Kombi Koffein presents ‘Muriel’, The Split Screen Bean Machine. A unique vintage mobile cafe experience. Direct Trade Organic Coffee, Chai, Chocolate or Tea Varieties with Maleny Dairies Milk in Compostable Cups and Lid. A guerilla cafe that is not run by chimps.”

It was at a family BBQ in West End at Orleigh Park, that I launched my idea and announced my grand plans. Having always been a bit of a black sheep, and considered a bit of a dreamer, my plans were met with family cynicism. My father shot down my idea with the cutting reply of “that’s a ridiculous idea, you’d be better off doing a coffee van.” Famous last words, I’d say.
